Navigating your apprenticeship - Inspiring insights for future apprentices
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, George Pitman, Site Manager for BAM shares his inspiring apprenticeship journey with us and provides his key recommendations to apprentices following in his footsteps.
I started my BAM apprenticeship in 2016 through a shared apprenticeship scheme, beginning with a project at Plymouth Science Park, followed by a smaller primary school project in South Molton. These experiences allowed me to take on more responsibilities and develop my skills in a hands-on role on-site.
I then moved to a larger project, the Hydrographic Office UK in Taunton, where I gained valuable skills in day-to-day site operations. As one of the first apprentices in the rotation programme, I explored various roles within the company, enhancing my understanding of business operations.
I also contributed to the expansion of my former secondary school, creating a modern teaching facility for teaching and participated in the Emergency Nightingale Hospital project in Exeter during the Covid pandemic, an experience I will never forget.
I have now completed my Level 6 Degree and enrolled on a BAM futures leaders programme. Reflecting on my apprenticeship journey here, is what I would recommend to current and future apprentices:
Stay committed – Keep pushing forward. Your dedication will pay off. Celebrate small victories along the way to keep yourself motivated.
Discuss your learning needs - Your learning experience is a shared journey, and it is important to communicate your interests and goals.
