BAM starts work to bring step-free access to St Erth station
St Erth station in West Cornwall will be made accessible to all users for the first time.
BAM has commenced work to install a new footbridge with lifts at St Erth station, bringing step-free access to the whole of the grade II listed station for the first time since it was built in 1852.
Contracted by Network Rail, BAM will carefully dismantle the current footbridge and rebuild at Cranmore station on the East Somerset Railway – a heritage steam railway.
This work continues Network Rail’s investment on the iconic St Ives branch line, which carries a million passengers a year, supporting tourism and businesses in the area.
The project is part of the Government’s Access for All scheme to improve access at stations across the country.
Project completion is forecast for spring 2024.
Phil Bowcock, Operations Manager at BAM, said:
“BAM is working in close partnership with Network Rail to install the new footbridge and lifts at this grade II listed station, making it accessible to all. We’re planning our work at St Erth carefully to maintain access to the station for passengers and to minimise any impact on local residents.”
