BAM to deliver new Post Primary School in Greystones Co. Wicklow with sustainability at its core
With work already under way for the new Greystones Community College, BAM will deliver the new school with a floor area of approximately 11,000m2 located on a 4.6 hectare site.
The school is being delivered under the Department of Education’s Design and Build programme and will cater for the school’s ever expanding student population, accommodating 1,000 pupils with over 50 classrooms including a number to support students with additional educational needs.
The project also includes new car parking and drop-off area within the site and all associated site works, boundary fence, ballcourts, hard and soft play areas, sensory garden and landscaping including SUDS surface water attenuation.
As part of BAM’s sustainability strategy, like all our projects, we’re approaching the build with sustainability as a central driver, resulting in a lower carbon footprint and a school which is more economical to run. For example, BAM proposed the use of soil stabilisation below raft slab foundations as an efficient and sustainable solution, eliminating the need to excavate large volumes of soil, exporting off site and importing fill material. This means we are able to reuse the existing soil from the cut excavations, a much greener solution.
We will also use a precast concrete frame for the main structure as part of our modern methods of construction to deliver the project within a tight programme.
Luke Gibbons, BAM Ireland Regional Managing Director, said:
“BAM is delighted to be working on this important project, which will deliver a top-class space for learning for generations of Wicklow students to come. The sustainability agenda of this project aligns very well with BAM’s own strategic objectives of building a sustainable tomorrow and enhancing the lives of the people we touch with our projects. We look forward to working collaboratively with the College on this vital project for the Wicklow region and to supporting the Department of Education in the delivery of its ambitious Design and Build programme.”
At the recent sod turning Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board and Greystones Community College were delighted to welcome An Taoiseach, Simon Harris TD.
He said: “I welcome the opportunity to attend this monumental groundbreaking ceremony on this ambitious new school project for Greystones Community College. The new building represents a significant investment in delivering state of the art permanent accommodation for Greystones’ newest school. I am delighted that the Department of Education have affirmed the critical importance of delivering this post-primary educational facility. The new school building will enable the Management of the school to cater for the increasing demands to access post primary education here in Greystones.”
The advancement of the project will be a significant boost to the families of primary school students in Greystones and Delgany who wish to avail of multidenominational secondary education.
The school is due to open autumn 2025.
