BAM to make travel easier and more accessible with Hither Green station upgrade

BAM has started work to transform accessibility at Hither Green station - making travel easier, quicker and more inclusive for thousands of people every day.

The main construction work is delivered by BAM on behalf of Network Rail and the South East Alliance, following £28 million of Department for Transport funding through its Access for All programme.

Once complete, passengers will benefit from step-free access across all six platforms, with a new footbridge, four 16-person lifts and staircases. Two new accessible entrances will also be built on Fernbrook Road and Springbank Road, directly connected to the new bridge.

The upgrade will remove the need for passengers with accessibility requirements to travel via central London just to change trains – reducing time, inconvenience and reliance on taxis or buses. It will also make every day journeys easier for parents with buggies, cyclists and anyone travelling with luggage.

BAM has already started piling works either side of the railway to support the new structure. The existing station entrances, facilities and footbridge will remain open throughout construction, with completion expected in autumn 2027.

This scheme builds on BAM’s ongoing work to support accessibility improvements at other stations across the UK, including St Erth in West Cornwall, Leatherhead, Shortlands and Herne Bay.

Richard Watts, Rail Sector Director BAM UK & Ireland said:

"Train stations built hundreds of years ago can present significant challenges, particularly for those with limited mobility or families traveling with children. That’s why I’m so proud to be involved in the accessibility improvements at Hither Green Station, as well as the ongoing work across numerous other stations.

This project not only makes sustainable public transport more inclusive, but it also reflects our core values of ‘Thinking Beyond the Build.'

David Davidson, Network Rail Kent Route Director: “Hither Green is a vital piece of our rail network and these upgrades to create a step-free station are so important for ensuring we are supporting passengers with accessibility needs and improving the passenger experience.”
