Diversity & Inclusion

What if ‘making possible’ means more than simply delivering our projects? For us, true sustainable progress goes beyond physical structures. So we focus on building incredible teams to deliver great projects. Our people are what set us apart.

For us, it starts with a fundamental question: why can’t our workplace be as diverse as our world?

In the end, our business is all about creating spaces, places and solutions for everyone, so it’s clear that BAM needs to be a place for everyone too. It’s the best way to make sure that we deliver what’s really needed: projects that reflect the diverse needs and values of the communities where we work.

Our differences make us stronger

Our commitment to diversity and our efforts to make BAM an inclusive place are based on practicality as well as values.

We have to be resilient and look ahead: to future-proof our business and to make sure we grow sustainably.

The many different backgrounds, cultures and experiences that our people bring to BAM make us all the richer. Their unique perspectives enhance our business. Their experiences drive creativity and innovation.

Whilst we comply with statutory requirements for gender representation in leadership roles, our work champions a culture of enablement, empowerment and ownership, where diversity of thought and perspective is always welcome. We lead with an inclusion-first mindset, and ensure every colleague understands the role they play in making inclusion part of everything we do.

We expect our leaders to value difference. To be self aware and open to different thoughts and ideas. To create a culture built around respect and collaboration.

We lead as role models by doing, by daring and by being inclusive.

“Taking on the role of D&I Trainer alongside my EPMO Project Management responsibilities has deepened my passion for people and highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion at BAM. Our people are crucial to driving lasting change and shaping our culture. By fostering D&I, we create stronger, more innovative teams where everyone can thrive, leading to success for both individuals and BAM.

Leanne McLouglin
Programme Manager

“I have worked in organisations where D&I was discussed and seriously considered. Never had I seen genuine all round interest and evidence of a leadership team that is striving to create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard as much as I’ve seen at BAM. I am proud to work in a business where I can see that we own our D&I journey and that it isn’t being foisted upon us by our clients.”

Sector Clients Director - UK

“I’m so proud that we’re paving the way for a more inclusive construction industry. It’s not something that happens overnight. As well as the big, strategic initiatives it relies on steady commitment and continuous efforts. Thousands of tiny actions, from every one of us, every day.”

An on-going journey

We’re pleased with the progress that we’ve made in diversity and inclusion over the past years. In our most recent inclusion assessment we achieved Silver level. Previously, BAM had been assessed as a Bronze level company.

But there’s still a lot to be done.

Some of the specific initiatives we’ve put in place include:

  • Inclusion networks that support our people to be themselves and bring their whole identity to work. Ability at BAM, Forces at BAM, Minority Ethnic at BAM, Proud at BAM, our Gender Action Network and Future BAM all help bring our diversity and inclusion policy to life
  • Accountability and governance through a series of action plans and steering groups at divisional level
  • Our internal ‘passport’ for neurodiverse and disabled colleagues – the GO Card – a document that’s owned by the individual and helps them to communicate any reasonable adjustments they might need in the workplace
  • Talent-based leadership and management programmes that we recently resigned to be more accessible and transparent
  • Diversity and inclusion training that’s available to all levels in our organisation – including our supply chain – in a range of formats including in-person, e-learning and podcasts/webinars.
