BAM to Deliver M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway — A Landmark in Ireland’s National Infrastructure Development

BAM has officially signed the main construction contract , marking a major milestone in the delivery of one of Ireland’s most significant infrastructure projects. The €206 million contract, awarded by Cork County Council, forms part of a broader €456 million investment that includes land acquisition, advance works, and relief roads.

The project will see BAM deliver 11 kilometres of mainline motorway from the Bloomfield Interchange to Barnahely. Construction is scheduled to commence in the coming months, with completion expected by summer 2028.

Funded by the Department of Transport through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the M28 will play a vital role in supporting the ongoing development of the Port of Cork’s deep-water facilities in Ringaskiddy. It will also enhance regional connectivity, improve safety, and reduce travel times for both commercial and commuter traffic.

The M28 is a designated part of the Core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the EU’s strategic framework for linking ports and major logistics hubs. The project is expected to generate significant economic and environmental benefits, including job creation, reduced congestion, and improved air quality.

The contract signing event which took place 22nd May was also attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, and Minister of State for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer, highlighting the Government’s strong support for strategic infrastructure development.
